ABOUT THE BOOK
The Gratitude Express follows Daniel, a young journalist traveling to see his ailing grandfather. Struggling to write a eulogy, he boards a mysterious, unlisted steam train that appears from another era. Guided by a stoic conductor and his wise parrot, Daniel journeys through forgotten moments of his past—times when small acts of kindness quietly changed others’ lives.
At each stop, he discovers the power of gratitude: how expressing and receiving it can heal and transform. When the train finally delivers him to his stop, Daniel sets aside the eulogy to thank his grandfather in person—just in time.
As the Gratitude Express steams into the distance, it leaves a lasting reminder: life’s meaning lies not just in what we do, but in the love and thanks we share. Blending fable, nostalgia, and emotional truth, The Gratitude Express is a gentle lesson in never waiting to say the words that matter and how sharing with someone how they have impacted your life can in turn change theirs. Written in a style of fable, for people of all ages.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Previously a CEO, Walter sold his company and turned his focus to inspiring others—as a lecturer at Wharton, a contributor to Forbes and U.S. News & World Report, and the author of the bestselling book This Is The Moment!
Today, through his Say It Now movement, Walter encourages people everywhere to speak to each other —in person or virtually—to honor and appreciate the special people in their lives, not after it’s too late, but now. Walter’s latest book, The Gratitude Express celebrates the core of the Say It Now movement, encouraging readers to express their thankfulness to others today.
Prior to Walter championing the Say It Now movement, he served for 25 years as Chairman and CEO of Harrison Conference Services, guiding it to become the nation’s largest conference center management company. Passionate about giving back, Walter has since supported organizations like Reality Changers and WE (formerly Free the Children). Together with his wife, Lola, he helped establish Kenya’s first “needs-blind” college, ensuring opportunity for every student.
TALKING POINTS
- How Saying Thanks Can Boost Happiness, Strengthen Relationships, and Even Improve Your Health.
- Recent celeb passings are a common way to show an overflowing reverence of what that person meant to someone. Did they know it? Why can’t we know what we mean to others before our funeral.
- Why Say It Now is the antidote to performative social media gestures and the rise of digital disconnection.
- Why the Say It Now Movement wants gratitude to be a daily practice and why Thanksgiving shouldn’t be the only time we pause to appreciate people’s impact on our lives.
- How The Gratitude Express and the Say It Now movement are helping educators build empathy, emotional literacy, and connection in the classroom, and offering help and direction to children and teens to better understand the meaning of gratitude, loss, and legacy through storytelling
- How the Say It Now Movement is helping people have the conversation they’re afraid they’ll wish they’d had.
- Why Expressing Thanks Is One of the Most Powerful (and Overlooked) Mental Health Tools We Have.

“The Gratitude Express by Walter Green beautifully illustrates the profound impact of expressing gratitude to those who have touched our lives, weaving a heartfelt narrative that encourages readers to cherish and acknowledge their relationships before it’s too late.”

“The Gratitude Express is a powerful and poignant tale that vividly demonstrates the transformative power of gratitude—an essential (but increasingly forgotten) glue that binds us, humans, together as a bonded social species. Simply put, it urges us all to ‘say it now’, and enrich our lives and the lives of others with heartfelt appreciation.”
—Matthew Walker, Ph.D. and Professor, University of California, Berkeley
“The Gratitude Express, written by my good friend Walter Green, is a little book with a big lesson: life is short and unpredictable. If you have something you want to say to a friend or loved one, you should say it now! My wife, Margie, and I agree. We tell people ‘Keep your I love you’s up to date.’ Nobody knows what the future holds. Thanks, Walter, for the loving wake-up call we all need.”
—Ken Blanchard, Ph.D. and Bestselling Author
“Walter Green has lived a life worth living. I love the way he sees the world and how he lives his life. Of all the biohacking and longevity obsession going on these days, few if anyone are talking about having meaningful relationships and expressing our gratitude for their impact on our lives. Let us be grateful for Walter and The Gratitude Express!”
—Simon Sinek, #1 NYT and WSJ Bestselling Author and TEDx Speaker
“Walter Green takes a simple concept and transforms it into some of the most powerful moments we as humans can experience. The Gratitude Express reminds us that we often wait too late to tell the people in our lives the tremendous impact they’ve had on us. This book reinvents the way we embrace gratitude and shift humanity in a time when we need it most. This actionable, inspiring book helps foster deeper connections with the individuals that have helped shape our lives.”
—Cynthia Thurlow, NP and Bestselling Author
“The Gratitude Express by Walter Green is a touching journey about the power of gratitude. In a world where most of us live somewhere between guilt from our past and anxiety about our future, this story demonstrates the importance of living in the present and using love as our main language. The inspiring message lingers long after the final page, prompting us to reflect on the significance of fostering connections and embracing moments of gratitude in our own lives.”
—Ric Elias, CEO of Red Ventures and “Miracle on the Hudson” Survivor
“The Gratitude Express is a beautiful invitation to slow down, reflect on the extraordinary people who have enriched our lives, and share our gratitude in meaningful ways. It’s a powerful catalyst for strengthening bonds, mending relationships, and living with greater fulfillment by acknowledging the generosity and goodness around us.”
—Craig Kielburger, NYT Bestselling Author and Global Social Entrepreneur
“Walter Green’s message in the The Gratitude Express has revolutionized the way we view gratitude across the globe. Why we wait until someone passes to tell them how they’ve enhanced our lives is an antiquated tradition that only leads to a life of regret. Say It Now is the answer humanity needs today to conquer our most challenging times. It changed my life and how I live.”
—Chaitra Vedullapalli, CEO, Forbes 1000 and Global Speaker
