This article was written by David Hancock, Founder and Publisher at Morgan James Publishing. This article originally appeared on The Ethan Report.
During one of our Guerrilla Marketing for Writers Mastermind meetings, Dan Miller shared how to leverage your book to earn six figures and beyond.
During the presentation, Dan shared different methods of earning money based on a nonfiction book. Each method has several different ways of earning money.
Here are some examples of how you can leverage your book into six figures or more.
1. SPEAKING
The first topic Dan talked about was speaking. You can create keynotes and breakout sessions based on the content of your book.
Many beginner speakers can charge $2,500 per speaking occasion. So, if you do 20 speaking engagements a year, that is $50,000 in revenue.
Or if you charge $5,000 and do 10 speaking engagements, that equals $50,000.
You can choose how much you charge and decide how many times you speak each year.
Speaking is the first way to earn additional money based on the content in your book.
The next method to earn money is product sales.
2. PRODUCT SALES
Products sales are when you create e-books, reports, and digital courses based on your book’s content.
E-books and reports are often low-priced products that sell from $19 to $49. Dan mentioned he usually sells reports on his site for $17.
Online courses based on the content of your book can sell anywhere from $197 – $997. If you sell 100 courses at $197 that is another $19,700.
So, far the total revenue for speaking ($50,000) and product sales ($19,700) for a total of $69,700. (This doesn’t include any reports you sell.)
The third way to earn revenue from your book is with events.
3. EVENTS
There are several types of events that you can create.
Live Events
Live events can be online or in person. Dan shared that he has done several two-day events each year, with 60 people attending each event in the past.
Another example is if you hold two events each year and charge $300 per person for 20 people, this equals another $12,000.
Coaching
Coaching is another way to earn additional money based on your book. If you create 3 different packages of 750, 1500, and 2500 and average $1,000 a month, it is another $12,000.
For this example, if we add Live Events and Coaching, the total revenue is now $93,700. ($50,000 from speaking, $19,700 in product sales, $12,000 from live events, and $12,000 from coaching)
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is when you promote someone else’s product and then earn a percentage of the revenue generated.
Here are a few affiliate promotions that Dan did in the past.
One example is that he found a book that was being liquidated. He thought the book would resonate with his audience, so he bought the copies for $1 per book.
On his website, he sold the book as an add-on to other products for $10. This is not a traditional affiliate type of promotion, but essentially, Dan made $9 for each book he sold.
Another example is most major conferences have affiliate opportunities. Many conferences will pay 33.33% per ticket sold. If the conference is $1,000 per ticket, you earn $333.33 for each ticket you sell.
Dan promoted one conference and told his audience to meet him at the event and he would buy them dinner. Eighteen people from his audience bought tickets and met him at the conference. They all had a fun time at dinner, plus this generated about $4,000 in affiliate commission for selling the 18 tickets.
Moreover, it helped him connect with his readers and build stronger relationships.
As you can see, these are just some of the ways that you can earn additional money based on your book. With some creativity you can leverage your book into additional revenue for your business. These revenue streams can create profits for many years into the future.
