ABOUT THE BOOK
What if all our biggest problems are actually one and the same problem?
The defining challenges of the 21st century, climate change, biodiversity loss, food and water insecurity, rising inequality, declining health, eroding trust in institutions, and a growing loss of meaning, have been recognized for decades. So why have we still not managed to solve them?
A work of urgent journalism and long-term thinking, The Only Possible Solution offers a hopeful and holistic vision of a future that can actually work. Investigative journalist Fons Burger offers no slogans or quick fixes. Instead, he connects ecology, economics, psychology, technology, and governance into one coherent and accessible narrative, revealing how these crises are deeply interconnected. Rather than treating them as separate issues, Burger shows how they are symptoms of the same underlying system failures. Attempts to fix one problem in isolation often create new ones elsewhere.
Drawing on the insights of leading thinkers, scientists, and activists, he explores how we can redesign our foundational systems so that human well-being, ecological balance, and long-term resilience no longer work against each other, but reinforce one another.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Fons Burger is a journalist and author whose work focuses on one central question: how can we solve the complex, interconnected crises of our time? Blending investigative journalism with cultural innovation and activism, he has spent decades developing projects, documentaries, and initiatives that challenge conventional thinking and point toward systemic change.
Since 2003, he has published nine books in Dutch, including thrillers, novels, and cookbooks, three of which were later released in the United States. In December 2025, the English edition of his latest novel, 2125 – The Hibernator, was published, a visionary story about awakening in a future where humanity has learned to live in balance with nature.
With The Only Possible Solution, Burger brings together years of research and experience into a clear, compelling vision of how a better future can actually be built.

- When did you first realize these crises were connected?
- Why is an integrated approach unavoidable, and what does this look like in practice and what would change tomorrow if we applied it?
- Climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality, and public health crises have been discussed for decades. Why do you think humanity has struggled to act effectively despite awareness?
- You connect ecology, economics, psychology, technology, and governance. How do these fields interact in ways that most discussions about global crises miss?
- Are there any real-world examples that give you hope that systemic change is possible?
- You’ve made a career out of exploring solutions to global challenges. What discoveries or ideas have most changed your own perspective?
