Four Video Marketing Tips For Authors

SHARE

Video has become one of the most important tools for writers to grow and engage their audiences. Every social media platform is favoring video content because it helps keep users engaged longer than any other content type. In fact, eMarketer expects U.S. social media users to spend 61.1% of their time spent on social networks watching videos, up from 33.3% in 2019.

With that in mind, here are four tips for authors to raise awareness for their books through video—drawn from the strategic insights of our production partner, 3rd + Lamar.

  1. Be The Face Of Your Brand: You are your brand, so connect with your audience directly with videos. This is not something you should delegate. To build an authentic connection with your readers, we encourage you to appear on camera. It may feel unnatural at first, but over time (just like writing), you will find your voice.

Consider Q&As or Ask Me Anythings (AMAs) with your audience to make your content interactive and engaging. This will also help you learn what your audience is interested in about you and your book.

  2. Done Is Better Than Perfect: Don’t get stuck on the idea that every video you publish must be polished and flawless. There’s a time and place for high production value. For instance, when you have a major announcement or book launch, it could be worthwhile to invest more in video content. But for day-to-day posts on social media, don’t overthink it.

Selfie-style videos filmed on your mobile device can be impactful. Oftentimes, these videos feel more authentic and relatable to your audience, which can lead to a more personal connection.

  3. Focus On The Why: It may feel intuitive to focus your attention on telling people what your book is about. But explaining your motivation for writing the book is just as important as sharing the storyline.

Was there a seminal moment in your life that inspired you to tell this story? This context can draw readers in and create a more visceral reaction with your audience, which will make your book more memorable than if you focus only on the plot and characters.

  4. Content Collabs: There are likely other authors in your same genre who have large online audiences. Perhaps there are some authors with successful YouTube channels. Consider contacting these authors to pitch them on content that you can collaborate on and share with your respective audiences. Writing is not a zero-sum game. You can tap each other’s fans to grow together.

BONUS TIP:
Want an easy way to explain what your book is about without getting too far into the weeds? If possible, find a book similar to yours that is already well-known. Tell fans that if they like that book, then they’ll like your book, except your book has certain elements that make it unique. This way, people will get a general idea of what your book is about without you having to explain the minute details, and you can associate your book with genre fan-favorites.

This approach may not work in all cases, but it’s a quick and effective method to make your book memorable. Think of it as part of your elevator pitch.
