Boost your audiobook’s visibility with strategic publicity! Learn how to target the right audience, leverage your narrator’s star power, use social media effectively, and secure valuable reviews. See how The Duchess of Kokora by Nikhil Prabala made waves—and how you can do the same for your audiobook.

In recent years, audiobooks have skyrocketed in popularity. They provide busy readers with another option for their favorite stories, allowing them to be consumed while commuting, cleaning, crafting… you get the idea. Audiobooks have allowed stories to reach an extended audience who may not be able to take time out of their days to sit and read.

With the increasing popularity of audiobooks, standing out in the market requires a strategic and well-executed publicity campaign. Here are some tips to make your audiobook promotion a success, using Nikhil Prabala’s The Duchess of Kokora as an example:

Know Your Audience

The first step in any publicity campaign, audiobook or otherwise, is understanding your target audience. Who are they? What platforms do they frequent? As mentioned above, audiobook listeners appreciate their convenience and consume content during commutes, workouts, or while multitasking. Tailor your messaging to highlight these benefits and resonate with their lifestyle.

Nikhil’s The Duchess of Kokora is a Young Adult Queer Romantasy, so we targeted social accounts and other book outlets that cover YA, romance, fantasy, LGBTQIA+, and audiobooks.

Focus on the Narrator

The narrator is often a key selling point for an audiobook. If your audiobook features a well-known or highly skilled narrator, highlight their involvement in your promotional efforts—that will help drum up additional interest from people who may not be initially interested in your story, but follow the narrator closely. Share their insights, behind-the-scenes content, and even host live Q&A sessions to engage with fans.

Nikhil’s audiobook was narrated by Adjoa Andoh, Briderton’s Lady Danbury! We were touting her involvement from the rooftops, and were even able to get Shondaland interested in an interview with Nikhil. Without Andoh’s involvement to create the bridge between Shondaland and Nikhil’s romantasy, they may not have been interested. If you have a narrator who has previous media appearances, be sure to explore those outlets for promotion!

Utilize Social Media

Social media is an incredibly powerful tool for reaching audiobook enthusiasts! Share engaging content that will get your audience excited and grab the attention of other potential readers, like:

  • Teasers – if your narrator is well-known, like Nikhil’s, make it a game and see if any of your followers can figure out who it is before the announcement!
  • Fun, shareable quotes from the book with the narrator’s voiceover.
  • Behind-the-scenes snippets of the recording process.
  • Author and/or narrator interviews to create a personal connection with your audience.

Platforms like
Instagram and TikTok are particularly effective for showcasing audiobooks in creative ways.

Leverage the Power of Reviews

Reviews are crucial for audiobooks. Encourage early listeners to leave reviews on platforms like Audible, Apple Books, and Goodreads. Provide advance copies to trusted reviewers, bloggers, and influencers in the audiobook niche to generate buzz. The more reviews your audiobook has, the more credibility it gains—and the more good reviews it has, the more people will want to listen to it!

Target Audiobook-Specific Platforms

Promote your audiobook on platforms dedicated to audiobook listeners, such as:

  • Audiobook review blogs, bookstagrammers and booktokers, and podcasts.
    • Be sure to check out hashtags like #audiobookreviewer and #audiobookreview.
  • Communities like r/audiobooks on Reddit.
  • Specialized websites like Audiobook Reviewer and AudioFile.

Build a Dedicated Landing Page

Create a landing page that showcases your audiobook and the narrator, so anyone who comes to your website can see it! Include:

  • A synopsis of the book.
  • A sample audio clip.
  • Purchase links to major audiobook retailers.
  • Praise and reviews from early listeners.

While much of audiobook campaigns include similar pieces to your standard book promotional campaigns, the additional audible component gives you a wider range of potential readers and outlets who may be interested in coverage. It’s important to be aware of each piece of your book that you can leverage for maximum visibility. Things like identifying your target audience and showing off your narrator can help you stand out from the crowd, and using teasers of your audio over posts will help build excitement.

Remember, every campaign is an opportunity to tell your story in new ways and to create meaningful connections with listeners. With creativity and persistence, your audiobook can find its audience and make a lasting impact. Happy promoting!
