Podcast interviews offer authors a chance to connect with highly engaged, niche audiences who often listen all the way through and are hungry for content. Unlike traditional media, podcasts tend to be more conversational, longer-form, and personal, allowing you to dive deep into your book, your journey, and your expertise.
In this post, the first in our media training series, we offer tips and insights to help you prepare for your next podcast interview and make a lasting impression on listeners.
Pre-Interview Essentials
Listen to the podcast.
Every podcast is different. Some hosts are journalists, others are comedians, therapists, or just passionate fans. Understanding the tone, format, and pacing helps you show up aligned and ready.
Pro tip: Even five minutes of a recent episode can tell you a lot.
Know the audience.
Ask your host or producer: Who listens to this podcast? What’s their level of familiarity with your topic? What’s the goal of the episode (inspiration, education, entertainment)? This insight helps you tailor your responses to match the listener’s expectations and avoid going too technical or too fundamental.
Craft Your Talking Points (But Be Flexible)
Return to your book’s core messaging and pull out 10 key talking points or stories. Prepare memorable anecdotes, soundbites, and examples. Be ready for surprises! Podcast hosts may not follow a script—even if you or your publicist sent one. Go with the flow.
Microphone Tips: Sound Like a Pro
- Use a dynamic microphone (e.g., Samson Q2U or Rode PodMic USB). Avoid laptop microphones and condenser microphones, such as the Yeti, unless they are correctly configured.
- Keep your mouth a consistent distance from the mic. Don’t drift or turn your head.
- Position the mic slightly off-center to avoid popping “P”s and “B”s.
- Don’t bump the mic. Even minor vibrations sound like earthquakes to your listener.
Pro Tip: Test everything ahead of time using the platform’s green room or preview function.
Video Tips: Look Like a Pro
- Most podcasts record interviews via a streaming platform like Zoom or Riverside.fm, so assume you will be on camera for your interview. Some shows upload full episodes to their YouTube channels or use video snippets for social media. Even if they are only recording the audio portion, act as if the video will be used at all times.
- Position yourself so that your shoulders and head are full in frame, and you’re seated comfortably in front of your camera. Dress in clean, solid-color clothing, or very basic patterns. Avoid loud, distracting clothing.
- Tactfully position your book or a poster of the book jacket in the background, to provide a visual reminder of why you’re doing the interview.
During the Interview: Bring the Energy
- Say the title of your book at the start and end of the interview—ideally more than once.
- Speak clearly and with enthusiasm. Let your voice do the heavy lifting.
- Avoid filler responses like “uh huh” while the host is speaking—it muddles the audio.
- Smile. It sounds silly, but podcast listeners hear your smile. It boosts energy and approachability.
- Treat the conversation as live, even if it’s being edited. Everything you say matters.
After the Interview
- Ask the host for the airdate and a link so you can promote it.
- Share the episode on your social media, newsletter, and website.
- Tag the show and host when promoting.
- Let the host know how you promoted the episode. It increases your chance of being invited back!
Pro Tip: The more traffic and engagement you drive to one podcast episode, the more likely other podcasters will invite you too. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
Additional Key Tips for Podcast Guest Success
These additional best practices, adapted from advice shared by industry experts at AuthorMedia.com, will help you stand out and feel confident behind the mic:
- Avoid rambling. Podcast listeners appreciate clear and concise content. Practice staying concise while still being personable.
- Bring stories, not just facts. Personal anecdotes help listeners connect emotionally and remember your message.
- Don’t assume the host has read your book. Lead with your strongest themes and insights. You’re the guide!
Podcast interviews are a powerful tool in an author’s publicity toolkit. With the right prep, a focus on clarity, and a few intentional moments to highlight your book, you can leave a lasting impression that turns listeners into readers.
